Why visit Phuket?

If you’ve never thought about Phuket for a holiday, now is the time to start thinking. Phuket is a beautiful island in southern Thailand and it has everything you could wish for in a holiday destination. There are cheap Phuket flights available from most countries and as one of the most popular parts of Thailand, Phuket has a lot to live up to, but it can deliver the goods.

Phuket has history, and you can see it in abundance in Phuket Town, where there are all sorts of colonial buildings and interesting sidestreets to explore. Check out Soi Rambutri for a little Phuket timewarp, complete with tea shops and funky bars and guesthouses.

Phuket also has lots of temple. The biggest and most impressive is Wat Chalong. The locals say that you haven’t arrived on the island until you’ve found yourself at Wat Chalong. Another site worth seeing, and one that’s close to Wat Chalong, is Phuket’s Big Buddha statue. This statue is huge and once you get to the top of the hill, you’re treated to great views out over the island of Phuket.

If you enjoy partying, Phuket is a great place to go drinking and clubbing. Check out Phuket Town for a large number of exciting local bars and clubs. The Thais love to dance to indie and rock music, and there are usually live bands on. Phuket also has lots of cheap beer bars and discos in places such as Patong.

Being an island, Phuket has lots of great seafood restaurants. Natural Restaurant in Phuket Town is one that springs to mind, but wherever you go on the island, there are lots of restaurants serving everything from Indian food to Mexican. And if you like Italian food, you’ll be overwhelmed by the number of Italian restaurant.

Phuket really does have it all and a holiday on the island will never leave you.

Restaurants in Phuket

The restaurants in Phuket are one of the reasons why the island is so popular. Whatever you like, be it Indian food or pizza, you’ll find lots of places to eat in Phuket. The dining scene has evolved and all tastes and budgets are catered to.

Not all the Phuket restaurants you come across will be expensive. There’s really nothing wrong with eating 30-baht noodles from a street vendor. It’s what the locals and expats do from one day to the next. Thai street food is revered all around the world, so you know you’re in for a treat whatever you choose.

If you like pizza, there are more than enough pizza restaurants in Phuket to satisfy your palate. As you would expect, Pizza Hut is a pretty strong contender. Hot on its heals is Pizza Company, which actually makes better pizzas than the US giant. For something a little less packaged, check out Toto’s near the Laguna entrance. The pizza there is fab.

Another pizza joint worth a visit is Salvatore’s in Phuket Town. There are lots of Italian restaurants in Phuket. Some might say there are actually too many. Many of the Italian restaurants you might see in Patong are decidedly average. Another one in Phuket Town, and one that’s worth a visit, is La Gaetana. It’s a little pricey, but the food is top notch.

As a general rule of thumb, the Phuket restaurants you find in Patong are overpriced and aimed squarely at tourists. The food isn’t always quite up to scratch, so you may want to look elsewhere if you’re a big-time foodie. That being said, there is a decent food court at Robinson in Jungceylon shopping mall. Food courts are great for trying Thai food. They’re also very cheap, which is always a bonus.

Enjoying Phuket nightlife

Phuket is fast becoming Thailand’s top island destination in terms of partying. The full moon parties have had their day and even the island of Koh Samui has lost its charm in recent years. The Phuket nightlife scene has been developing quietly and looks set to get better and better in the years to come.

You’ve probably heard a lot of things about Phuket nightlife. Do a few Google searches and you’ll find pictures of scantily clad Thai girls gyrating. That’s one side of nightlife in Phuket and it goes on mostly in Patong.

The nightlife in Patong is loud and brash. There are lots of discos, beer bars and a few go-go bars. There are a few clubs that stand out and are worth visiting. Hollywood is a relative newcomer in terms of nightclubs. It’s certainly nothing to get too excited about, but if you fancy dancing and drinking to mindless music then this place can be a lot of fun.

Club Lime was once the best club in Phuket. It took the Phuket nightlife scene by storm when it first opened, hosting great parties with local and international DJs. The club has since taken the populist route and now hosts lots of all-you-can-drink events and foam parties. Still fun if you’re in the right frame of mind – can get very busy.

Elsewhere, Phuket nightlife is a lot more stylish. Take Surin Beach for example. It has recently become the hip place to hang out and party in Phuket. Stereo Lab and Catch Beach Club are leading the way in that respect.

Another side to Phuket nightlife can be found in Phuket Town, which is where you’ll discover dozens of local nightclubs with live music and cheap whiskey to keep punters entertained until 1 or 2 am.
